Brown County and Nashville, Indiana

Known for natural beauty and forested hills, Brown County is home to the Brown County State Park, Yellowwood State Forest and parts of Hoosier National Forest. This makes the area perfect for hiking, horse riding, camping and fishing. Indiana is also one of the leading producers of hardwood and much of that wood comes from Brown County.

Nashville is one of Indiana’s most popular tourist destinations and has many unique shops, galleries and restaurants. In the 1800s it was the center of the Brown County Art Colony. Hoosier Impressionist artists T.C. Steele, Will Vawter, Carl Graf and Marie Goth all lived and painted in Nashville. The art tradition continues to this day and many artists have galleries in town or studios throughout Brown County.

Where exactly is Nashville?

Nashville is 60 miles south of Indianapolis and centrally located between Bloomington and Columbus, making it a great commuter community.

To the west, Bloomington is home to Indiana University, Big 10 sporting events, unique dining and a vibrant arts scene. To the east is Columbus, Indiana. Famous for its architecture, Columbus is also home to many manufacturing companies, including Cummins Engine.

Local Government

With a population just shy of 1500, Nashville is the county seat of Brown County and center of county government. The Town of Nashville is governed by a 5-member elected council.

The School System

The award-winning Brown County School District consists of 5 schools. There are three primary schools throughout the county, Helmsburg Elementary, Sprunica Elementary and Van Buren Elementary, that serve grades K-5. The Brown County Middle School (6th through 8th grades) and Brown County High School (grades 9-12) are all located in Nashville, Indiana, just minutes away from Woods Lane.
